Stress and Low Self-Esteem

People with low self-esteem are more likely to feel anxiety, worry, and to feel lost when they walk into a tense situation. This is because individuals with low self-esteem do not usually know who they are. It is easier for them to list their negative points. They rarely know what their strengths or their good points are. Nor do they easily recognize their skill sets. All these ingredients are necessary to better handle difficulty.

In counselling, a first step towards growing self-esteem involves writing out what you like about yourself, what your strengths are, and your skill sets. To help find these, think about what you are like in different situations, such as in school, at home, with friends, on the job, in conversation, etc. Then ask people you trust what they like about you and add it to the list. Read this list over daily until it becomes set in your mind.

The next time you are in a difficult situation, recall points from the list that can help you in the current situation to steady you, give you insight, and will help steer you through to a more successful completion.
